Once around, please
On september 20th, 2007 Roger rode for the first time on his new Flyer TS from Schmitten to work at Granges-Paccot. Depending on itinerary, the distance is around 12.5 km. After one year, 3000 km had accumulated, and the question arose whether the bicycle would keep for 40'000 km and how many batteries this would require.
Milestones
Even after the opening of the "St. Léonard" railway station in 2013, the bicycle was overall the best solution in respect to time, health, environment and work-life balance..
At 7000 km a new cycle computer was necessary, because the previous one flew from the Grandfey bridge passage after I fell on the frozen pavement, and was found only after several days beneath the bridge, dead.
For a few years, the trip counter was reset only at 1000 km, and it became evident that the travel time was quite constantly at 33 hours, making an average speed of 30 km/h. Given the topography containing a lift of aournd 100m per way, that is OK.
The first battery (with a capacity of 10 Ah) was exhausted at around 18'000 km and needed a replacement after the range fell below 25 km. The second battery had a mere 6 Ah and lasted up to about 28'000 km verwendet werden. Der third one holding 16 Ah is still in use. In order to reduce battery usage, Roger always uses "medium assistance" since 2009.
On march 27, 2017 the Flyer had reached 30'000 km corresponding quite well to the initial estimation of 3000 km per year. In winter 2017/2018 QRS started its activity at an office in Schmitten. For projects with his former employer, Roger still commuted regularly to Granges-Paccot.
New itinerary from April 2018
After QRS moved its office to Bern the project revived, at a log of 34'700 km.
On april 6, 2020 the odometer passed 38'000 km. The battery range is 45 km (Bern-Fribourg-Schmitten) in moderate westerly winds.
On July 6, 2020, 39'000 are passed despite lockdown reduced commuting
On August, 28th, 2020, the odometer flipped to 40'000 km on the Roundabout in the small village of Schmitten.
